Telegram, one of the world's most popular instant messaging and social media platforms, has surpassed $1 billion in annual revenue for the first time since implementing its monetization model three years ago. This milestone was announced by the platform's founder and CEO, Pavel Durov, in a written statement shared via Telegram.
Durov highlighted significant growth in Telegram Premium subscriptions, revealing that the number of Premium users tripled this year to exceed 12 million. Despite these achievements, 2024 has not been without challenges for Durov. On August 24, he was detained at Paris’ Le Bourget Airport while disembarking from his private jet. The detention was reportedly related to allegations that Telegram was used to facilitate access to illegal content.The Paris Prosecutor’s Office stated that Durov faced 12 different charges. After a 96-hour detention, he was released on August 28 under judicial supervision. He was required to pay a €5 million bail and remains subject to legal proceedings.
